Assistant Sales Manager Home Grown





JOB SUMMARY:  Responsibilities include sales, product development, and marketing of Sakata products for Home Garden, Farm Market, Controlled Environment Agriculture, and young plant grower distributors in assigned territory. Works with the team to develop marketing plans, sales strategies and action plans. Duties include building and maintaining customer relationships, planning and implementing sales strategies, forecasting sales, arranging and reporting on field trials, and coordinating various sales programs for assigned territory.


  • Promotes sales of company products to achieve maximum market penetration and to attain both short and long-range objectives for sales growth and profitability.
  • Establishes and attains sales goals. Wins new business. Secures contracts and sales orders from customers through:
  • Visiting customer facilities
  • Customer contact and follow up via e-mail, video meeting, or in person
  • Strong professional customer/vendor relationships.
  • Product development of new/experimental varieties with distributors and growers.
  •  Arranges and implements experimental variety trials, both internal and with distributors/growers.
  • Gathers and shares information regarding forecasts, product trends, and possible new business/sales.
  • Works closely with Sakata customer service team to ensure all customer needs are met in a timely manner.
  • Attends (in person, through video conference or conference call) meetings with Director of Vegetables Sales and Marketing, Sales Managers, Marketing Communications, Customer Service, Technical Support Staff and Supply-chain staff to quickly and efficiently inform and be informed of current business requirements.
  • Performs any directly related or other appropriate duties as assigned with minimum personal supervision.
  • Maintains appropriate sales, product development and marketing and other reports and files.
  • Must utilize expense account with prudent judgment.


  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of the vegetable and or home gardening industry preferred.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to coordinate a high level of activity under a variety of conditions and constraints.
  • Comfort with selling in a team setting with shared goals.
  • Must have the overall ability to use tact and discretion to achieve goals with and through others.
  • Computer knowledge and/or the ability to learn new programs, including but not limited to Microsoft Office. Experience with CRM a plus.
  • Ability to handle stress especially when encountering necessary projects, deadlines and/or high workload.
  • Must be able to work under strict time constraints and requirements.
  • Strong character traits required including emotional stability, adaptability, ability to handle stress, cultural and gender sensitivity, and honesty.
  • Open to changing goals and objectives


  • Minimum three years’ experience in agriculture or horticulture, sales or product development or related fields.


  • An undergraduate college degree in agriculture, horticulture, or business or its equivalent in training and experience required.


  • Must have a valid driver’s license and excellent driving record.


  • Must be able to occasionally work long and/or irregular hours.
  • Must be able to work outdoors on a regular basis.
  •  Must be able to travel around the USA and Canada by car and air approximately 4-10 days/nights per month.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Professional (preferably dedicated) remote office set up required for customer and Sakata internal meetings.
